My brother stayed home from middle school to play EverQuest. I think he made the right choice. But what will the next one be? Riot no doubt has the resources, but tying their MMORPG to League of Legends feels a bit too obvious and safe. Perhaps even a little disappointing. But I'd be happy to be proven wrong.
What about Lucasfilm? A modern MMORPG in the Star Wars universe seems much more compelling than Galaxy's Edge. Old Republic could use a successor. Star Wars meets No Man's Sky?

With the cost savings granted by automation and superior technology, as you've stated, I'm surprised more huge IPs aren't taking advantage of the demand for slice of life and role playing in an open world. But maybe they are and the development churn is in full effect.
